Portering and Facilities Management

Portering Teams keep the wheels running (literally) inside the busy hospital environment. Moving everything and everyone, from air ambulance / helipad arrivals  to boxes of paper, from blood samples to  oxygen cylinders, if it needs moving, it needs a porter!

Foam mattresses impose a huge workload on portering teams - shifting mattresses from one ward to another, from storage to bed, and vice versa, and often there is no provision for safe mattress handling or storage.
Ultimately, this has huge costs attached:

⇒Inappropriate lifting and manual handling causes back injuries

⇒Storing mattresses on the floor, in corridors or bathrooms is unhygienic, represents an obstacle and causes scuffs and tears

⇒Using inappropriate equipment, such as a Supply Chain trolley (a) causes damage and (b) lost trolleys are charged for, imposing £1000's of costs, unnecessarily

So what to do?
