Intensive Care

Intensive Care medicine has a relatively short, though incredibly fascinating history, starting in the UK in the 1950's. The concept of the Intensive Care Unit or Intensive Therapy Unit, originated in Copenhagen, as a result of the 1952 polio epidemic. Many of the critical care professionals using this website may already have read it, but a very interesting debate called "History of British Intensive Care, c.1950-c.2000", can be found here.

Much has changed in the field of Intensive Care but early mobilisation of patients, is here to stay;  numerous published studies indicate the benefits of sitting out and the access this gives to earlier mobilisation; yet it can be difficult or even impossible to ‘sit out’ some complex or ventilated patients using conventional transfer methods and traditional specialist seating.
‘Trolley’ or ‘Stretcher’ type chairs that go flat for patslides are one possibility but can be unsatisfactory – from the patient perspective, they tend to be rigid and uncomfortable for prolonged periods of sitting and from the nursing or therapy staff perspective, if they are not height adjustable or easy to operate, they can present manual handling risks or can be difficult to match to the height of the bed.

Alongside Wintur Healthcare, our specialist seating manufacturing division, has been working closely with nurses, therapists and patients since the late 1980’s and our seating range has developed through direct input from healthcare professionals – the Sertain® range is the most complete line up of Intensive Care Seating systems available, designed and proven to make the achievement of Early Mobilisation, Easier, Quicker, More Comfortable and Safer
The Sertain® S4400 series of chairs eliminates all of the barriers to early mobility that we have discussed above and is used daily by many Intensive Care Units across the world to sit out and mobilise complex and highly dependent patients.
The Sertain® Chair is used in: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Canada, USA, The UK and Ireland.
What makes the Sertain® Intensive Care Chair different and what can it help to achieve within the ITU setting?
